SB700
The SB-700 Speedlight: First Impressions at Pixiq
"In summary the SB-700 looks like a highly practical tool. I am slightly disappointed that there is no option to connect an external SD-9 / SD-8a battery pack but on balance the other features and functions more than make up for this."
Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Misses it By This Much - Strobist
"But they have excluded a key feature that will make you wanna pull your hair out. Any guesses?"
SB700 - First Grope by the Strobist
"The SB-700s have awesome build quality, super-fast recycle and lots of bells and whistles. But are they worth 2X an LP160? That is totally a case-by-case call, depending on your wallet and how much you will use them."
SB-700 Speedlight review by Rob Galbraith
"The SB-700 is a great new addition to Nikon's Speedlight line, one that has many of the fine attributes of the SB-900, but without its bulk, heft or tendency to heat up...I've already voted with my wallet, purchasing an SB-700 to use as my primary on-camera flash after testing one out for this article."
SB-700 review at FlashRaw
"To me, the SB-900 is like a sports car. If you need to go fast, you’re going to want that extra juice. The SB-700 is like your commuter car – it’s not going to go as fast, but it’s essentially more practical in almost every other way. With faster controls, a more intuitive interface, and nearly the same flexibility, all in a smaller, lighter package, and this new flash is hard to deny."
Nikon SB-700: Guest Review by Jason Lykins - Terry White
"I didn’t know what to expect when I ordered the SB-700. Would it be closer to the SB-800 or the SB-600? What I found was an awesome flash with the power, control, and options that make it a must have for my flash arsenal. I will be adding more of these great units to my flash bag as needed. If you are in the market for a new Nikon CLS flash, you should take a long hard look at the SB-700."
Nikon SB-700 First Impression by Kent Yu
"Should you replace your SB-600 with SB-700? Depends… As a slave flash, the SB-600 does the same job as the SB-700. You can’t expect much difference as a slave flash. However, the new MASTER/COMMANDER mode on its own is worth the upgrade. If you are buying your first set of flash and are keen to know what Nikon’s CLS can offer, go with the SB-700. The SB-700 is also much more travel friendly than the SB-900."
SB700 flash review at the Phoblographer
"If you are in the market for a Nikon flash then you have two real options, the SB-700 or the SB-900. Given those two choices I feel that the SB-700 is the best value. It has nearly all of the features of the SB-900, but is smaller than the gigantic SB-900. I would recommend that anyone looking to buy a flash seriously consider the SB-700."
SB700 speedlight review by Todd Owyoung

Q&A: How to Use Your Nikon SB-900 in Optical Slave Mode - Strobist
"As most of you know, the discontinued Nikon SB-800 speedlight has an awesome -- yet, oddly undocumented -- built-in slave. But given the questions I have gotten recently, many people who own the newer SB-900s are not aware that their flash has the same capability."
SB900 flash review by Neil van Niekerk
"With the SB-900 Speedlight, Nikon’s flagship flashgun, it is clear that they did their homework.  The SB-800 was a great flashgun, but there were certain things about it that were very frustrating, but the Nikon SB-900 gets all of this right."
How Would You Change the Nikon SB-900? by Terry White
"We can assume that Nikon is probably working on the their next Speedlight and here's what I'd want:
  • Either give me a sensor on both sides or make it RF based
  • Make it smaller or give it more power. Pick one!
  • Give me the option of buying an accessory that allows me to plug it into the wall! If I'm using it inside and power is available why should I have to use AA batteries.?
  • Lower the price a bit. It's hard to justify buying more than one of these when you can get strobes for the same price!"

SB-910 Speedlight review by Rob Galbraith
"If you like the SB-900 then you'll like the SB-910 even more. Its strategic interface improvements, new clip-on filters, faster recycle speed and, most-importantly, a revamped approach to internal heat management that keeps the SB-910 firing, these and other tweaks add up to a flash that is similar to but plainly better than the SB-900 it replaces."

"The Nikon R1C1 Close-up Speedlight Commander kit is a part of Nikon’s Creative Lighting System (CLS) employing iTTL (intelligent through–the-lens) control. With it I have made over 12,000 exposures in just over two years — enough for any working assessment."

Pocket Wizard FlexTT5, MiniTT1 and AC3 for Nikon by Kent Yu
"Both FlexTT5 and MiniTT1 are solidly build. All buttons are clearly laid out, however I am disappointed to see the hot shoe mount is not metal but plastic. The AC3 is extremely small and lightweight, the 0/M/A selectors feel a bit small to me and the hot shoe mount is also made out of plastic."
Flash The Bus by Strobist
"Within about 5 seconds, it was decided that McNally would light and shoot it as part of the afternoon class. And I knew that Mr. Heinz 57 Speedlights would come up with something typically cool. But I wanted to grab it guerilla-style, before heading off to lunch, so I could have a souvy pic for myself."
Fruit Roll Ups & Nikon CLS - Outdoor Photo Blog
"When Nikon invited us to use their CLS lighting system creatively, I wonder how far out they thought the "creative" part of that name? Put a few photo geeks with Nikon cameras in a Colorado back country ice cave and watch out."
Guest Blog with Jason Lykins Reviewing The PocketWizard Flex units for Nikon - Terry White
"I have recommended that every Nikon shooter I know to get on the waiting list for these things. I ordered three more to expand my lighting possibilities myself. If you’re tired of losing CLS distance in bright sunlight, if you want to extend your flash distance and keep TTL, if you want to put flashes out of the line of sight and still be able to trigger them reliably, the PocketWizard Flex units are for you."

In addition to some basic information on each Speedlight, I will provide a comparison chart on the bottom of this article as well, to make it simpler for our readers to understand the differences."
Flash for Nikon DSLRs by the Mansurovs
"I remember when I purchased my first DSLR, I expected it to be a world better than my old point and shoot that I used for years. It certainly was much better when taking pictures on a sunny day outside, but not that great for taking pictures indoors with flash. To my disappointment, the images from my DSLR looked almost as flat as images from my point and shoot camera and I could not figure out if it was me doing something wrong or the camera that had limitations for taking pictures indoors."
How to get the best out of your pop-up flash by the Mansurovs
"If you are using an entry-level or a semi-professional DSLR, your camera most likely has a built-in pop-up flash unit that can be used to add some additional light on your subjects or even trigger another flash. The problem with built-in flashes, however, is that they fire harsh, direct light that does not look very good, especially on people. In this short article, I will show you how you can get the best out of your pop-up flash."
Hangin' Eight, with Dave Black - Strobist

On Assignment: HoCoPoLitSo by Strobist
"Sometimes you happen upon beautiful window light for a portrait, and there is no sense even unpacking a speedlight -- just frame, and snap away. Alas, this portrait of Ellen Kennedy was not one of those times."
One Small Flash, Very Far Away…. by Joe McNally
"...right now, I am content to mess around, sometimes surprisingly, with how far I can trigger a light. This light is an SB900, zoomed to 200mm, at the back of the auditorium, probably 70' from the stage. 1/250th at f2.8, ISO 400."
