The New Nikon D3100 D-SLR Empowers And Inspires Users As The Simple Solution To Stunning Pictures And Amazing HD Video

Nikon releases firmware update for D3100 - DPReview
"Nikon has released a firmware update for the D3100 digital SLR that addresses a significant list of bugs and errors. Firmware v1.01 rectifies errors relating to autofocus, playback and noise reduction. This includes the reduction of a magenta cast at the bottom of still images captured at high ISO settings after using live view or movie shooting for a long period. The firmware is available for immediate download from Nikon's website."

"Let me say it for the umpteenth time, that one of the first things I like to do with any new camera is test it’s sensitivity to infrared capture. Soon after the Nikon D3100 arrived on my front porch, I  charged the battery went to Barr Lake state park to try the camera with my infrared filter fit."

"Pictures from the review camera and lens were up to expectations. Exposures were better positioned than with the D3000 so we found less highlight clipping in JPEG shots. Colours were recorded with a natural-looking balance under most lighting types and in-focus images were sharp and detailed."
D3100 review at DigitalReview
"Overall we were very pleased with the field performance of the Nikon D3100 in our tests, and have no hesitation in recommending the camera as a great family, travel SLR. With user-friendly operation the camera can be picked up right away and used in a point and shoot capacity delivering pleasing results."
D3100 review at CameraLabs
"So Nikon's latest entry-level DSLR may no longer be a true budget model, but by upgrading the existing D3000 with Live View, 1080p HD video and an even friendlier GUIDE mode, the new D3100 will sell by the bucketload. So long as you understand what it can't do, we can Highly Recommend it. Ultimately the D3100 is the best DSLR for discerning beginners with a little more to spend."
D3100 review at ePhotozine
"The D3100, with its built in guide, numerous scene modes, and creative retouching menu is aimed at someone who wants to take great photos without too many complications, and it makes a great camera for those also looking for manual controls. Overall the Nikon D3100 would make a Highly Recommended purchase for those looking for a high quality DSLR with full HD video, without having to spend over £500."
D3100 review at PhotoRadar
"Naturally, it all comes down to image quality in the end and this is where the D3100 is at its most impressive. Great metering and autofocus accuracy, coupled with excellent performance in the sensor and image processor ensure that photos look stunning almost every time, straight off the camera."
D3100 review at PopPhoto
"Considering that you can get the D3100 for $250 less than Canon's Rebel T2i, the D3100 stacks up well against that top dog of the entry level. Sure, it trails the Canon a bit in resolution and focusing speed, especially in dim light. But the D3100 has even more accurate colors than the Canon and basically matches it in noise performance."
D3100 reviewat PhotographyBLOG
"Compared to the one-year-old D3000, Nikon has managed to simultaneously increase the pixel count and improve quality at high sensitivity settings, with the D3100 enjoying at least one stop of advantage over its predecessor."
D3100 review at DCResource
"The Nikon D3100 is an entry-level digital SLR that can start off as a point-and-shoot camera, and then gently guide you into the world of manual controls. Once you factor in its good (albeit soft) photo quality, impressive selection of features (especially for beginners), and HD movie mode, it ends up looking like a pretty good deal for $699 (with lens). It's not a perfect camera by any means, but it's still good enough to earn my recommendation."
D3100 review at Imaging-Resource
"In most other areas, the Nikon D3100 turns in a solid performance, if not a particularly startling one -- but then, you wouldn't really expect that of an entry level model. Exposures are metered nicely, and color is accurate, if a little oversaturated. Auto white balance does well, but is still a little warm under incandescent lighting. Flash coverage at wide-angle is a little uneven, and the optical viewfinder still suffers the alignment issues noted previously in our D3000 review."
D3100 video capability by Neil van Niekerk
"So how did the Nikon D3100 fare? Quite impressively actually…The video quality is superb. Really impressive. Skin tones looked great, and digital noise wasn’t a problem at all. The sound we recorded with the on-board microphone was also clear."
D3100 review at DPReview
"There's no doubt that the D3100 is one of the best entry-level SLRs available, offering very good image quality coupled with speedy operation and straightforward handling - at least for conventional eye-level use. Where it's less strong is in the implementation of the new features that have been added over the D3000, i.e. live view and movie mode. Neither is done badly, per se, and the improvement in CDAF speed is impressive, but they could still be better."
D3100 review at TrustedReviews
"In summation then, the D3100 feels solidly constructed when gripped in the palm, is fast and responsive, and is capable of some sharp and colourful results thanks to combination of sensor and supplied 18-55mm test lens and is fairly priced. As such the D3100 is something of a no brainer choice for anyone who doesn't already own a digital SLR, but desires the more professional in appearance results that such a set up can bring."
D3100 review at DigitalCameraReview
"Nikon's new entry level DSLR offers nice still image quality with good high ISO performance all rolled in to a compact and light DSLR. The 18-55mm kit lens is a solid if unspectacular performer with average AF times, but generally good image quality and a very usable close focus distance. Shutter lag seems minimal despite timings that place it toward the bottom of the pile amongst entry level DSLRs."
D3100 review at the Phoblographer
"I thought I would have more problems with this camera because I am used to more robust DSLR’s cameras, like the Nikon D90 or the D7000. Strangely, however, I found myself liking the Nikon D3100. The camera was extremely practical, light, nimble, and easy to use."
D3100 review by the Mansurovs
"When it comes to image quality, the Nikon D3100 does not disappoint. With a 4 MP jump in resolution over D3000, one would expect image quality to degrade, given the smaller pixel size. As I have demonstrated in pages 2, 3 and 4 of this review, the Nikon D3100 performs very well against the semi-pro Nikon D90 at high ISOs and similarly well against the new Nikon D7000 DSLR."
D3100 review by Thom Hogan
"The D7000 sets a very high bar for consumer DSLRs in the Nikon lineup now. The D3100 is about at the D90 level in terms of image quality in most respects, but the bar moved. That makes the "value" of the D3100 a bit less than it probably should be. At US$499 it would be a great value. At it's current price of $599 (with kit lens), it's an average value. Obviously, over time that price will come down."
D3100 review at Shutterbug
"When all is said and done, this is a pleasant entry-level camera that could easily be considered “my first Nikon,” or by wedding photographers as a second camera they can use or hand off to an assistant to shoot candids or video coverage of the ceremony, cake cutting, and other wedding “greatest hits” that could be combined into a presentation for the bride and groom."

D3100 review at DigitaCameraInfo
"We were impressed with the Nikon D3100’s still image performance, as it put up solid color scores, improved dynamic range significantly over the D3000, upped its ISO sensitivity all the way to 12800 (keeping noise down), and was still able to shoot at a respectable 2.8fps. We would’ve liked to have seen a more accurate and responsive white balance meter, but it’s really a small complaint that is easily fixed with a little more babying in-camera or one or two clicks in post production."
D3100 review by Steve Huff
"It’s an improvement over the D3000 without question and it has the Nikon look, feel and spirit. If you have some Nikon glass and want a starter DSLR or a backup, the D3100 will fill those needs perfectly."

"The D3000 slots into Nikon's DLSR line-up below the D5000, replacing the D60 and D40x at the entry level position. Although not the smallest in its class, the D3000 is nonetheless compact as befits its target market. Offering 10.2 megapixels of effective resolution, it provides lots of features that will appeal to first-time DSLR buyers."

D3000 review at DPReview
"The D3000 is an excellent camera, and great value at its current street price."
D3000 review at Shutterbug
"For beginners it’s a competitive model with most of the features you’ll enjoy and need to make very good images, and there’s no doubt that it and the system surrounding it will yield a decided advantage over a point-and-shoot model in a similar price range."
D3000 review at DPInterface
"If a basic and affordable digital SLR is all that you need, then the Nikon D3000 is a good potential candidate. The D3000 offers a fair amount of simplicity for those starting out and helpful guidance (built-in to the camera) for those learning to use the camera to its full potential."
D3000 review at PhotoRadar
"We likened the search for the perfect beginner’s camera to the quest for the Holy Grail. While the D3000 is beginner-friendly, it’s by no means perfect in that respect. Nonetheless, it’s competitively priced, performs capably and the GUIDE mode works well."
D3000 review at PopPhoto
"...while its test results put this Nikon in the middle of the budget DSLR pack, we can’t ultimately recommend the D3000 over Canon’s EOS Rebel XS, which has higher resolution, faster AF, and better noise control."
D3000 review by Thom Hogan
"...the target user Nikon intended for this camera should avoid it--the camera is too confusing in the "easy" mode and too complicated in the "normal" mode. The D5000 is a better choice, all things considered (and has visibly better image quality)."
